One of several Grand Avenue businesses west of Lexington Avenue housed in a former residence, My Sister’s Closet is a gem of a consignment shop that occupies a peach colored house with purple trim. With that color scheme, you’d think it would be hard to miss, but I drove by it about a zillion times before I saw it at all. However once it caught my attention and I had a chance to venture inside, I realized immediately that I’d entered a treasure trove of gently used wonders.
Swing open the front door and you’re greeted by a melee of clothing and accessories that may feel a bit overwhelming. But pace yourself and you’ll be rewarded. Although most offerings are from mall mainstays like H&M, Ann Taylor, and Jones New York, the occasional Tracy Reese dress, Michael Kors sweater, or Ungaro jacket will surface. The bulk of the first floor’s pieces will appeal to stylish middle-aged women with classic tastes, but trendy pieces are displayed prominently and can be found easily tucked into the brimming racks.
A mass of handbags sits to the left of the wrap counter, and on any given day will include loads of vintage Coach alongside new or nearly new knockoffs. The counter itself houses a dazzling array of costume jewelry, and toward the back of the store you’ll find furs that will make your heart pound, from wraps and jackets to floor-length wonders.
Veer right and you’ll find a cowboy-boot-lined staircase that takes you to the mind-blowing second floor of goodies. Racks of shoes from midmarket brands like MIA and Kenneth Cole Reaction inevitably hold a few gems from Ferragamo, Cole Haan, and Stuart Weitzman. But the main event upstairs is the vintage offerings. Sure, there are classic sheath dresses from every era imaginable, wool capes in pristine condition, and Chanel-style blazers and faux fur galore. But it won’t take long for you to unearth far more outlandish finds. My Sister’s Closet has generously offered me a cowl-necked black leather wiggle dress, a floor-length crocheted patchwork skirt, and a blue and white polka-dot cardigan with mink trim. If you’re sick of looking like everyone else and desperate to inject a little vintage funk into your personal style, this is the place for you.
