People bandy about the term “unique” without giving much thought to its true meaning. Unique doesn’t mean “unusual” or “different” … it means one-of-a-kind, distinct, unequalled. And I can say without hesitation that I Like You is a unique shop.
For starters, it is carpeted with thick, lush faux grass and boasts a large wooden swing hanging in the front window. To the right of the checkout counter is a pink-wallpapered mini-cave littered with assorted toys and costumes, and housing a TV offering Sesame Street spinoffs to any kiddos who might tag along for your visit. The co-owners often bring their own utterly adorable offspring into the shop to play, entertain customers, and encourage sales. (I am NOT yanking your chain. I have been asked, on several occasions, “Are you gonna buy that?” by an owner’s darling daughter. Talk about a hard sell …) The back, less finished section of the space holds tables and benches covered in craft supplies, where the owners will soon be offering classes and workshops to budding artisans.
But even if the décor and furnishings don’t strike you as utterly inimitable, get this: I Like You’s wares are 90% locally made, and the remainder are all created by independent artists. If Etsy were to open a storefront, this would be it. That cute cloth handbag by Third Willow and those funky newsboy caps by Grovecraft? Handmade originals. Resin-coated graphic belt buckles sporting owls and crows, perfect for jazzing up an old pair of jeans, were made by owner Sarah Larsen Sweet. Graceful graphic tees by Rectangle Design and screenprinted jersey scarves by MBMB call to you from racks and rails, while jewelry crafted from leather, feathers, buttons, toy parts, and vintage plastic flowers winks at you from the gorgeous antique wrap desk. This place is all about adornment: Don’t expect to find a classic pair of slacks for work, but do expect to find a sweet little rose-shaped hairclip that’ll make all your officemates green with envy.
If, for some strange reason, you can’t find a thing to your liking, you’re still guaranteed to unearth ideal gifts for the artfully-minded folks in your life. Handmade soaps, photos and block prints from local artisans, hilarious handcrafted greeting cards, and knick-knackery of every size and type abounds in this endlessly fun and affordable shop.
So grab the kids and head on over. You’re bound to leave with armloads of fun and funky goodies that are as genuinely unique as the shop that sells them.
