Shop here for: Unbelievably beautiful small-run garments, fun graphic tees, and kitschy jewelry
The next time you are in the market for a bicycle print bustier romper or a pair of high-waisted gaucho pants, I suggest you stop at Design Collective first. This teensy shop is barely visible to passersby, but well worth hunting down since it contains clothing that will delight customers with its whimsy, creativity, and beauty.
After climbing a short staircase and entering what looks like an apartment building, you’ll find yourself inside a cramped, narrow space with mint green walls and battered hardwood floors. Sunlight streams in through the floor-to-ceiling display windows, lending some sense of spaciousness to the store, but unless you’re the sole visitor, you’ll find yourself dancing awkwardly with other patrons to view the goods. But it’s well worth the trouble.
Stacks of cheeky graphic tees line low shelves, but the free-suspended racks that hang alongside the windows constitute the main event. Although a few simple garments have snuck in, most of Design Collective’s wares require some bravery and imagination on the part of the wearer. You’re more likely to find jumpsuits and bloomers than day dresses and pencil skirts, and each garment bears the beautiful stamp of the handmade. Embellished tunics and patchwork miniskirts sway on the racks as you rifle through the dresses and tops, stopping to ogle a Max Lohrbach masterpiece of cotton voile, patchwork, and embroidery.
Funky panties, handmade belts, and handbags crafted entirely from duct tape fill the square shelves next to the dressing rooms. Delicately feminine jewelry at utterly affordable prices lines the far wall, and a rotating selection of seasonal accessories litters the checkout area. If you can’t find a dress or a tee that tickles your fancy, one of these little adornments is bound to catch your eye.
Check back often, as new items appear regularly. And since many pieces are truly one-of-a-kind, come prepared to buy.
