Heartbreaker is a teenage girl’s dream come true. Most items are $30 or less – including shoes and several styles of jeans – and every piece sold there is trend-tastic. In fact, Heartbreaker is an ideal place to shop for coveted of-the-moment items because its wares are so inexpensively made that few will last more than a season’s worth of washings. Except, of course, for the jeans.
The store is gigantic, and gives off an unfinished vibe. Grey-white walls showcase brightly printed tunics and dresses, enormous PVC handbags, and basic tees in a rainbow of colors. Makeup and incense are displayed in glass cases near the front entrance. Oversized metal, shell, and wood earrings and bangles hang from white wire grid racks next to the utilitarian checkout counter in the center of the main floor. A tantalizing selection of shoes and boots from the basement footwear section lines the display windows. The shop’s only adornments are its goods.
On the main floor, cute dresses fashioned from polyester, cotton voile, and drapey knits are available in abundance, although they generally require the proportions of an Olsen twin to carry off. Sweaters often feel displeasingly synthetic, as do blazers and coats. If it’s trendy it’s here, from leggings and burnout tees to printed wellies and corset belts. Cotton tees in a variety of shapes are the store’s strong suit, and although the brands are relative unknowns such as Be Cool, Bozzolo, and Karma, prices are low enough that you won’t much mind.
Peeking out from the racks of single-season duds are designer jeans from the most coveted of the established labels. Although premium denim appears to be confined to the main floor, you’ll have to peruse said floor in its entirety to find all the enclaves of label lust-inducing jeans. Four or five styles at a time are available from Hudson, Joe’s, Rich and Skinny, and several others. The ownership has clearly gleaned that its customer base, while unwilling to spend on dresses and accessories, will plunk down several months’ of allowance money for some status denim.
Behind the checkout counter, you can peer down an exposed staircase into the lower floor. Saunter on down to find more yet more cotton tops, floaty maxi dresses and a handful of incongruous seeming vintage frocks, a small selection of pajamas and underwear, and designer knockoff shoes at prices that make Target look like Nordstrom. Again, nothing is built to last, but if you are hankering for a style fix and haven’t the dough for the genuine article, Heartbreaker is an option.
