Shop here for: Batik prints, boxy jackets, long skirts, accent pieces for stylish older women
A relative newcomer to the Franklin and Hennepin shopping district, this deceptively small storefront opens onto an airy, spacious-seeming shop. Hardwood floors adorned with Asian rugs, bright white walls, blonde wood fixtures, and high ceilings all contribute to a serene, open shopping environment. Mehera Shaw is the brainchild of clothing designer Shari Keller, who creates garments from cottons and hand-printed cloth imported from the Jaipur region of Rajasthan, India. The entire company is dedicated to sustainable clothing manufacturing, and employs “green” cotton and environmentally friendly fabric dyes.
The Uptown shop – one of only two in the country – offers voluminous batik printed skirts, kimono-influenced boxy jackets, flattering wrap tops, obi-sash dresses, and feminine silk blouses in vibrant color palettes. Very little black and gray is available on these racks, which overflow with magenta, purple, orange, brown, teal, and pink. Flat surfaces present patterned silk scarves and lush sarongs, while a small selection of jewelry peeks out from glass-fronted cabinets. Asian influence is evident in either garment design or fabric pattern on almost every piece, and all items are generously cut. Mehera Shaw is a treasure trove of comfortable, unusual pieces for an older woman whose signature style is “upscale casual.”
