V State occupies a small corner of a Calhoun Square space shared with hipster dudewear purveyor Atmosfere and discount suit retailer Suit Up. Upon entering, the neat rows of suits on your left provide stark contrast to the silky mini dresses, fitted jackets, and stacks of denim that you’re likely to see on your right.  Formerly home to Express, the store’s glossy black interior and slick furnishings create a perfect environment for showcasing V State’s small selection of club-ready skirts, burnout tees, and slinky sweaters. 

Blouses showcasing Custo Barcelona’s characteristically quirky design style are offset by simple, feminine dresses and tunics from Nu Collective.  Body conscious tees and tanks from Kowboys fan across tables that also proffer meticulously ripped, creased, and worn TAG jeans.  Gorgeous retro figure-hugging frocks from Bettie Page Las Vegas seem incongruous amongst the shiny, silky, and embellished, but are still quite a find at $150 to $200 a throw. 

The brand and item selection seems focused on color, flash, and showcasing one’s curves.  And although V State’s current offerings seem a bit thrown-together, in time this shop may cultivate a more seamless collection.  Keep watch.
