Description

If you’re looking for armloads of cheap, used duds at bargain basement prices, take your cash to Savers. If you’re looking for the most painstakingly curated collection of vintage gems in the Twin Cities, bring your credit card to Via’s. Yes, prices are a bit steeper here than they are at some other used and vintage emporia, but you’re paying for quality garments and the expertise of a staff that can tell you all about them.

You can’t see into the cavernous store from its iconic pink and black exterior, and the stoic mannequins give only a hint as to the treasures found inside. Via’s is a bit dimly lit, and does give off a slightly musty old-clothes smell, but the glittering jewelry counter that greets you on entry, shining racks of pristine vintage shoes to the right, and rows of colorful gowns from all eras eclipse all that in an eyeblink. Menswear is to the left, so head right toward the goodies for girls. Although you may find such jaw-dropping finds as wool cape from the early 1900s displayed above the racks, most of Via’s stock is from the 1930s through the 1980s. Crazily printed polyester blouses and wool circle skirts with miniscule waists, plaid pantsuits and fur capelets, silk slips in a rainbow of colors, and sassy hats from every era beckon from the racks. Look hard enough and you may even hit designer gold: A Diane von Furstenberg suit for $65, or a Calvin Klein sheath dress for $50.

Speaking of frocks, there is no doubt that the main attraction at Via’s is the dresses. Lining the leftmost wall is a collection of sheaths, gowns, and sundresses of epic proportions. The selection of styles, colors, and sizes is truly dazzling, everything from floor-length, open-backed velvet numbers to drop-waisted polka dot cotton frocks and everything in between. Since vintage sizing can be tricky, be sure to ask for help: The friendly, knowledgeable staff will be delighted to measure, guide, and advise you.

Via’s is also a safe bet if you’re in the market for a leopardskin pillbox hat, some sparkly vintage paste jewelry, or a gently used snap frame handbag. Once you’ve picked out the dress of your dreams, be sure to grab a gorgeous silk square scarf or set of spectator pumps to round out the transaction.

If you’re hankering for real retro, you can’t beat Via’s.
